  • Is there a clear, sustained increase over weeks, not one stressful fortnight?
  • Is your part visibly widening, or your ponytail noticeably thinner?
  • Is your hairline receding or your crown showing more scalp?

A clear "yes" to the last point points toward pattern loss rather than ordinary shedding, and is worth a dermatologist's eye. Diffuse, all-over thinning that came on after a rough few months points more toward temporary shedding. The three real drivers of early hair fall

Most early hair fall falls into one of three buckets. Getting your bucket right matters, because the response is completely different for each.

Temporary shedding (telogen effluvium)

This is the most common reversible cause. Telogen effluvium happens when a physical or emotional stressor pushes a chunk of hairs prematurely out of the growth phase into the shedding phase, with the shedding usually showing up about two to three months after the trigger. [2]

Documented triggers include acute illness or high fever, major surgery or trauma, the postpartum hormonal shift, an underactive thyroid, crash dieting or low protein intake, and iron deficiency, which is especially relevant for menstruating women. [2] A case-control study examining ferritin (iron stores), vitamin B12, vitamin D, thyroid function and trace minerals in people with chronic telogen effluvium supports the standard clinical habit of checking these when shedding is unexplained. [3]

The good news: telogen effluvium is usually self-limiting and reverses once the trigger is corrected. The fix is removing the cause or correcting the deficiency, a medical matter, not a herb.

Genetic pattern loss (androgenetic alopecia)

Pattern loss can genuinely start young. Cleveland Clinic notes that while the early stages usually begin in the 30s, some people see signs as early as their late teens, and about 25% of men notice the first signs before age 21. [4] It is driven by genetics and androgens, and presents as a receding hairline and thinning crown in men, and as diffuse crown thinning (often appearing later) in women.

This is the bucket that needs a dermatologist, not an oil. What Ayurveda offers - and what the evidence says

Here is the honest version of what Ayurvedic hair herbs can and cannot do. The classical actives have genuine traditional standing and some early laboratory signals, but very little human evidence for hair growth, and none that justifies a regrowth claim.

  • Amla (Phyllanthus emblica). In a laboratory and animal screen of traditional hair plants, amla extract was a notably strong inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, the androgen implicated in pattern hair loss. [6] This is an interesting mechanism, tested in a rat-liver enzyme assay and on mice, not human evidence that amla regrows hair or treats balding.
  • Bhringraj (Eclipta alba). In animal studies, topical bhringraj extract shortened hair-growth initiation time and increased growth-phase follicles in rats and mice. [7][8] These are animal models; human evidence is lacking, so it is best read as a signal that supports bhringraj's traditional keshya (hair) reputation, not a proven human outcome.
  • Brahmi and gentle oiling (champi / abhyanga). Traditionally used to condition the scalp and as a calming ritual. Regular oiling can reduce breakage and dryness and is a pleasant stress-lowering habit. Frame it as cosmetic, breakage-reducing scalp care, not a regrowth treatment.
