The short answer: does biotin really work for hair growth?

Biotin works for hair in one specific situation: when you are genuinely biotin-deficient. In that case, correcting the deficiency can restore hair that was thinning or shedding because of it. The problem is that true biotin deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults eating a normal diet.

For everyone else (the vast majority of people taking biotin), the evidence for a hair benefit is weak. A widely cited 2017 review in Skin Appendage Disorders examined every reported case of biotin improving hair and nails and found that benefit only appeared in people with an underlying deficiency or specific pathology; the authors concluded biotin "has no proven efficacy in hair and nail growth of healthy individuals" [1]. A more recent 2024 review reached the same verdict: the use of biotin as a hair supplement "is not supported by high-quality studies" [2].

So the honest answer is: biotin is not a hair-growth drug. It helps if you are deficient, and most people are not.


What biotin actually is — and how much you really need

Biotin is vitamin B7, a water-soluble B-vitamin your body uses to help convert food into energy and to support normal skin, hair, and nails. It is found in everyday Indian foods (eggs, nuts, seeds, dals and legumes, sweet potato, and bananas), and your gut bacteria contribute some too.

Here is the number that reframes the whole conversation. The amount adults actually need is tiny:

These figures come from the Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference Intakes and are echoed by the US National Institutes of Health [3]. Note the detail many blogs get wrong: the slightly higher 35 mcg applies to breastfeeding, not pregnancy.

Thirty micrograms is a very small amount, and a normal mixed diet generally supplies it. That single fact is why the mega-doses on pharmacy shelves deserve a closer look.


Is biotin deficiency common?

In a word: no. True biotin deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults on a normal diet. The IOM's reference review states plainly that "no definitive studies demonstrate evidence of biotin deficiency in normal individuals in any age group resulting from inadequate intakes" [3].

Deficiency does happen, but mostly in specific situations:

  • Eating large amounts of raw egg whites over time (raw egg white contains avidin, which binds biotin and blocks its absorption, though cooking deactivates it).
  • Biotinidase deficiency, a rare inherited condition usually picked up in childhood.
  • Long-term, biotin-free intravenous (parenteral) nutrition.
  • Certain anti-seizure medications and chronic heavy alcohol use, which can lower biotin status.
  • Pregnancy, where biotin status can dip in some women.

If you do not fall into one of these groups, your hair fall is very unlikely to be caused by a biotin shortage — which means a biotin supplement is unlikely to fix it.


How much biotin is in hair supplements — and is 10,000 mcg too much?

Now put the two numbers side by side. Your daily need is about 30 mcg. A common hair tablet contains 5,000 mcg, roughly 167 times the adequate intake. A 10,000 mcg tablet is about 333 times it. The US FDA has noted that some hair, skin, and nail supplements contain biotin at up to 650 times the recommended daily intake [4].

So is 10,000 mcg "too much" in the sense of being toxic? Reassuringly, no classic toxicity has been reported, even at far higher doses, and authorities have not set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for biotin because there is not enough data showing harm from high intake [3]. Biotin is water-soluble, so excess is largely passed in urine.

But "no toxicity" is not the same as "useful" or "harmless." Two things are true at once:

  1. There is no proven extra hair benefit from these mega-doses in people who are not deficient [1][2].
  2. There is a real, often-overlooked downside to high-dose biotin, and it is not classic toxicity. It is interference with medical lab tests (next section).

In short: you are paying a large premium for a number that has no proven payoff for your hair, while taking on a small but genuine practical risk.


The side effect nobody mentions: biotin and your blood tests

This is the part most pharmacy blogs leave out, and it is the most important safety point in this article.

High-dose biotin can interfere with many common blood tests that use a technology called immunoassay. Depending on the test, biotin can push the result falsely high or falsely low. The most serious concern flagged by the US FDA is a falsely low troponin result. Troponin is the blood marker used to diagnose a heart attack, so a falsely low reading could mask a real cardiac event. The FDA has also noted interference with thyroid (TSH), hormone, and fertility tests, and has received reports of adverse events, including one death, linked to biotin interference [4]. A peer-reviewed laboratory study has confirmed that biotin interference is real for high-sensitivity troponin T and TSH assays [5].

The practical takeaways:

  • Newer-generation assays are increasingly resistant to biotin, so interference is assay-dependent — it can happen, not that it always will.
  • If you take high-dose biotin, stop it for several days before any blood test, and tell your doctor and the lab that you take it. This is especially important before thyroid testing and in any emergency where a heart attack is being ruled out.

For a supplement with no proven hair benefit in non-deficient people, this is a meaningful reason to be cautious about routinely taking large doses.


Biotin vs multivitamin for hair fall — and finding the real cause

If you are choosing between a biotin tablet and a general multivitamin "for hair," neither is a guaranteed answer, but the more useful question is why you are losing hair in the first place. Persistent or unusual hair fall is usually a symptom, not a vitamin gap, and the common drivers in India are very treatable once identified:

  • Iron deficiency / low ferritin: common, especially in menstruating women, and a well-recognised contributor to hair shedding.
  • Thyroid disorders: both under- and over-active thyroid can cause hair fall.
  • Telogen effluvium: diffuse shedding triggered weeks after a fever (including a COVID episode), childbirth, crash dieting, surgery, or major stress; it usually recovers once the trigger passes.
  • Androgenetic (pattern) hair loss: the gradual, genetically driven thinning that biotin cannot reverse.
  • Protein-poor diet or restrictive eating: hair is largely protein.
  • PCOS: can drive hair thinning through hormonal pathways.

A simple blood panel (iron/ferritin, thyroid function, and others your doctor suggests) will usually reveal more than any supplement bottle. If your hair fall is patchy, sudden, or accompanied by other symptoms, see a doctor or dermatologist rather than self-treating with biotin.
