Quick answer. Grape seed extract comes from the seeds of wine grapes and supplies proanthocyanidins, plant polyphenols also called OPCs. Only tiny amounts reach the bloodstream, and the popular "powerful antioxidant" story has never been clearly demonstrated in living humans. It is generally well tolerated. You turn the bottle over to read the ingredients, and one word stops you: proanthocyanidins. Or grape seed, in a capsule that has nothing to do with wine.
So what is it, why did a wellness brand put 125 mg of it in there, and does "antioxidant" mean anything real on a label? We sell the capsule and we are still going to deflate the word, because the honest version is more useful to you.
What grape seed extract is, and what proanthocyanidins are
Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of wine grapes, Vitis vinifera, and contains proanthocyanidins, a family of plant polyphenols with a range of effects that may be beneficial [1]. You will also see them written as OPCs, short for oligomeric proanthocyanidins, which just means the shorter chains in that family.
They are not exotic. The same class of compound turns up in apple skins, cocoa, cinnamon bark and tea. Pressing grape seeds concentrates them.

What "antioxidant" actually means on a label
An antioxidant is a molecule that slows the oxidation of other molecules. That is a chemistry description, not a health outcome, and the gap between the two is where most supplement marketing lives.
The chemistry is genuine. Polyphenols do behave as antioxidants in test tubes. They can also act as pro-oxidants under other laboratory conditions, and neither activity has been clearly established inside living humans at realistic intakes [6]. The same researcher put it plainly a year earlier: flavonoids and related polyphenols have powerful antioxidant effects in many in-vitro systems, their health significance is uncertain, and consuming large quantities of them in supplements should not yet be encouraged [7]. That is a caution about the whole category, and we are repeating it on a page that mentions our own product.
A blunter data point gets quoted at supplements generally. A Cochrane review of 78 randomised trials covering 296,707 participants found no evidence that antioxidant supplements help with primary or secondary prevention of mortality, and beta-carotene and vitamin E appeared to increase it [5]. It needs a caveat in the same breath: that review tested beta-carotene and vitamins A, C and E plus selenium. It did not test polyphenols, and it did not test grape seed. Using it as a verdict on grape seed would be exactly the sloppiness this post is complaining about.
What survives is modest and defensible. Proanthocyanidins are plant polyphenols studied for antioxidant activity in the laboratory. Not "antioxidant protection". Not a shield for your cells. The wider version of this argument is in what "supports metabolism" actually means.
How much of it actually reaches you
This is the fact nobody in the search results wants to print, and it cuts both ways.
In a small study, four healthy adults took 2.0 g of proanthocyanidin-rich grape seed extract. Procyanidin B1 was detected in their serum two hours later, at about 10.6 nmol/L [3].
So absorption is real and measurable. That is a fair answer to anyone who says these compounds do nothing at all.
The other half: nanomoles per litre is a very small amount, and it came from a 2 g dose, sixteen times what our label declares. Four participants is a pointer, not proof, and none of it transfers to a 125 mg capsule.
Draksha, and an honest note on tradition
Grape, draksha, has real classical standing in Ayurveda. It appears in the traditional materia medica as a cooling, nourishing fruit, and Ayurveda traditionally describes it in that role, not as a source of isolated compounds.
Standardised grape seed extract is a different thing: a modern nutraceutical ingredient, made by concentrating the polyphenol fraction of the seed. Both are true. Dressing the second in the language of the first is a small dishonesty we would rather avoid.
One more piece of label honesty. We publish no percentage of proanthocyanidins for either capsule, because no standardisation figure is on file for our formula. Milligrams only, exactly as declared. Why that percentage matters when a brand does print it: what "standardised extract" means.
What it will not do, and when not to take it
It will not make you lose weight. In a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover trial of 51 adults eating freely, grape-seed extract produced no overall difference in 24-hour energy intake [2]. Only in the subgroup with a higher daily energy requirement was intake about 4% lower, with no effect on satiety or mood. That is the whole weight file: a null result with a small subgroup signal.
On tolerability, grape seed extract is generally well tolerated when taken orally [1]. A four-week open-label study of 29 healthy adults taking 1,000 to 2,500 mg a day reported intake up to 2,500 mg as generally safe and well tolerated [4]. Those amounts are eight to twenty times our 125 mg declaration. They are study facts, not directions for you.
Some people should be more careful:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Little is known about whether grape seed extract is safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so it is not suitable [1].
- Anyone on medication, including blood thinners. Talk to your health care provider first if you take any type of medicine [1].
- Low iron, or taking iron. In that four-week study, two people at the highest dose had a temporary serum-iron dip, low but within the normal range, which returned to normal two weeks later [4]. Separately, polyphenol-rich drinks reduce non-haem iron absorption from a meal in a dose-dependent way, by 60 to 90% at servings supplying 100 to 400 mg of polyphenols [8]. That study tested tea, coffee and cocoa, not capsules, but in a country where iron deficiency is common it is worth raising with your doctor.
- Any liver condition, or a past reaction to a supplement. Both capsules are garcinia-based, and that matters more here than the grape seed. A US liver-injury research network identified 22 high-confidence cases of moderate to severe liver injury linked to garcinia-containing products among 1,418 registry patients [9]. Rare, and documented. We would rather you knew.

Different processing, different compounds, different purpose. A capsule declaring proanthocyanidins is not giving you the oil, and the oil is not giving you the polyphenols.
