Quick answer. A standardised extract (US spelling: standardized extract) is a herbal extract lab-tested so every batch carries a stated amount of a specific marker compound, written as a percentage (for example, "standardised to 5% withanolides"). It exists to keep the dose consistent from batch to batch, not to prove a herb works better. Because the marker isn't always the active ingredient, a higher percentage means a more concentrated, more predictable dose — not a stronger one.
You are comparing two ashwagandha bottles: one "standardised to 5% withanolides," the other just "ashwagandha extract 500 mg" or "10:1." What does that 5% actually buy you?
What "standardised extract" means
A standardised extract is lab-tested so each batch delivers a known, fixed amount of a named marker compound, written as a percentage — withanolides for ashwagandha, curcuminoids for turmeric. "Standardised to 5% withanolides" means 5% of the extract, by weight, is withanolides.
Why the percentage is there: batch-to-batch consistency
Raw herbs vary: how much active a plant carries swings with soil, season and plant part, so two batches of the "same" herb differ. Standardisation pins the extract to a set number.
Take turmeric. The fresh rhizome carries about 2–5% curcuminoids (roughly 0.6–5% across Indian varieties) [4]; a standardised extract is manufactured to about 95% curcuminoids — the same plant concentrated to a declared spec, not a health claim. See turmeric and curcumin bioavailability.
What the percentage does and doesn't tell you
A marker is usually chosen because it is easy to measure consistently, not because it is the active ingredient. Regulators split them into analytical markers (for measurement) and active markers (which contribute to the effect), though the two are not always the same compound [2].
A 2016 PLoS ONE study tested marker compounds across several botanicals and found that, for most, the marker level did not reliably correlate with measured biological activity — only eucalyptus showed a meaningful link [1]. A herb's effect comes from many constituents acting together, so one marker rarely predicts it.
So a higher % is a more predictable dose of that marker, not proof it works better. It is one of the checks in choosing a safe Ayurvedic supplement.
Standardised % vs extract ratio (10:1): not the same thing
These two answer different questions. An extract ratio like 10:1 tells you how much raw herb went in — a process figure, not lab-verified, that doesn't reveal actual marker content. A standardised percentage tells you how much of a named marker comes out, verified against a reference standard (though not whether that marker is the active). A 10:1 ratio sounds impressive, but on its own it still won't tell you how much active you are getting.
How "standardised" is actually verified
A percentage is only as trustworthy as its test. Markers are quantified using HPLC and HPTLC, measured against a known reference standard [3]. The result should appear on a batch certificate of analysis (CoA) — a per-batch record of what your lot tested at, with contaminant checks such as heavy metals. Standardised extracts and Ayurveda
Classical Ayurveda does not use standardised extracts. Traditional preparations such as churnas (powders) and kwaths (decoctions) use the whole herb, on the principle its constituents work together. Standardisation is a modern quality-control layer added on top: tradition optimises the whole herb, standardisation dose consistency.
When a percentage doesn't tell you what you think
A standardisation figure is a quality-of-information signal, not a verdict. Read it with these limits:
- A higher % isn't "stronger" or "better" — only a more concentrated dose of the marker.
- Don't compare across different herbs. 5% withanolides and 95% curcuminoids aren't on the same scale.
- The plant part still matters. A declared % means little if the label hides whether it is root or whole-plant extract.
- A number can't replace advice. If you are pregnant, lactating, on medication, managing a chronic condition, or buying for a child, ask a qualified practitioner before choosing any supplement. The percentage says nothing about whether the herb suits you.
