Delhi Air and Your Skin: What Actually Helps Through Pollution Season

Quick answer. Delhi's PM2.5 does reach your skin, and the documented effects are surface-level: more pigment spots over years of exposure, a weaker barrier with faster water loss, and worsening of eczema-type conditions. What helps is unglamorous — cleanse properly in the evening, keep the barrier repaired, use antioxidants and sunscreen. No product detoxes skin.

Every October the AQI graphs go red and the skincare marketing follows. Anti-pollution serums, detox masks, "shields". Most of it is claim, not evidence.

The underlying problem is real though, so here is the honest version: what Delhi-NCR air is shown to do to skin, and the short list worth doing about it.


What this city actually throws at your skin

A 2024 study combining ground and satellite measurements over Delhi-NCR recorded a post-monsoon PM2.5 average of 140.12 µg/m³ in 2019, the worst of the four years it covered. In every one of those years PM2.5 rose from mid-October to mid-November as regional crop-residue burning peaked, running 27 to 34 times the WHO 24-hour guideline of 15 µg/m³ [1].

PM2.5 means particles under 2.5 micrometres. Small enough to settle into the skin's surface texture and follicular openings rather than sitting on top like ordinary dust.


What pollution is actually documented to do

Three findings are worth knowing, because they set the ceiling on what any routine can achieve.

Pigmentation. The most-cited study assessed 400 German women aged 70 to 80. Higher soot and traffic-particle exposure was associated with roughly 20% more pigment spots on forehead and cheeks, with a weaker link to wrinkles [2]. Two caveats belong with that number: it is a cross-sectional association across a lifetime of residence, not a one-season effect, and the women were white European, not Indian.

Barrier damage. A 2021 lab and human study found PM2.5 suppresses filaggrin, a protein central to barrier function. People who moved from low-PM2.5 Denver to high-PM2.5 Seoul showed measurable drops in filaggrin breakdown products, and in the lab PM2.5 raised transepidermal water loss [3]. A plausible mechanism for the tightness and sensitivity people report in Delhi winters.

Existing conditions get worse. An Indian dermatology review links polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a major component of combustion smoke, to extrinsic ageing, pigmentation and acneiform eruptions, and volatile organic compounds to atopic dermatitis. The common thread is oxidative stress [4].

The routine that earns its place

Four steps. Everything else is optional.

  1. Cleanse in the evening, properly, once. The only proven route for surface particles is washing them off. Gentle cleanser, lukewarm water. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, an oil or balm first makes sense, though double cleansing is a sensible habit rather than a tested anti-pollution step.
  2. Repair the barrier, do not strip it. Given what PM2.5 does to filaggrin and water loss [3], a plain moisturiser on damp skin does more real work in November than any serum. Abhyanga with sesame (Sesamum indicum) oil reaches the same logic: occlusion and lipid replacement, nothing exotic.
  3. Use an antioxidant in the morning. Since the shared mechanism across pollutants is oxidative stress [4], a topical antioxidant is a reasonable countermeasure. That is mechanistic reasoning, not proof of outcome, so stay sceptical of "pollution protection" claims.
  4. Sunscreen daily, AQI regardless. Haze is not a UV filter, and UV is the best-established driver of extrinsic ageing [4].

Retinoids and acids still work through pollution season, but a compromised barrier tolerates them badly. If skin is stinging, pull back to cleanser and moisturiser for two weeks.


The NCR-specific bits

  • Hard water is a separate problem in the same season. Tightness after a bath is usually the tap, not the air. See hard water and your skin.

  • Timing beats product. The mid-October to mid-November spike is predictable [1]. Front-load the boring habits in early October rather than reacting in December.

When to see a doctor

Skincare is for maintenance, not for conditions. Book a dermatologist if you have:

  • Eczema or atopic dermatitis that flares every AQI season, which needs medical management rather than moisturising around
  • Persistent symmetrical pigmentation across cheeks and forehead, which may be melasma and needs assessment
  • New or changing moles, or a patch that will not settle
  • Skin that stings with every product, which points to a barrier problem

Anyone with asthma or another respiratory condition should follow medical advice on air quality first. Skin is the lesser concern here.


Frequently asked questions

How can I protect my skin from the harmful effects of pollution? Remove what settles on the surface with an evening cleanse, keep the barrier intact with a moisturiser, use a morning antioxidant, wear sunscreen. That is the whole evidence-supported list. No topical product has been shown to stop PM2.5 reaching skin, so "shield" claims are marketing rather than mechanism.

What skincare routine works in Delhi pollution? A short one. Gentle cleanser at night, moisturiser on damp skin twice a day, antioxidant and sunscreen in the morning. Add nothing else through the October-to-January window. PM2.5 already weakens the barrier and increases water loss [3], and stacking actives on that is how people reach December with stinging skin.

Does pollution cause dull skin and pigmentation? Pigmentation, with a caveat about timescale. Higher soot and traffic-particle exposure was associated with about 20% more pigment spots on forehead and cheeks in 400 elderly German women, reflecting a lifetime of exposure rather than one season [2]. "Dullness" is not a measured clinical endpoint, though a rough, dehydrated barrier plausibly explains it.

Do I need to double cleanse in Delhi winters? Only if you are wearing sunscreen, makeup or heavy oils, in which case an oil or balm first removes them better. Otherwise one gentle cleanse is enough, and two do more harm than good on already-compromised winter skin [3]. No study shows double cleansing removes more pollution particles than single cleansing.
