Quick answer. Classical Ayurvedic hair oils are cooked in a sesame (til, Sesamum indicum) base; coconut (Cocos nucifera) is the household default across South and coastal India. For the hair fibre itself the lab evidence favours coconut — the one common oil shown to penetrate the shaft and reduce protein loss. Sesame's case rests on classical tradition, not comparative trials. Both are reasonable. Neither grows hair.

What a "base oil" means in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda a medicated oil is a taila: herbs are cooked into a fat until their fat-soluble constituents pass into it. The herbs are the intended actives; the oil is the vehicle. So "coconut or sesame" is a question about the vehicle — how it feels, how it spreads, how it behaves in your climate.
Myth: the oil in a hair oil is what does the work. Fact: in a classical taila the base is a carrier and the cooked-in herbs are the point. Base-oil choice is real, but narrower than the marketing suggests.
Sesame is the classical base; coconut is the household one
Classical taila preparations are cooked in tila taila — sesame oil, still called til here. It stays liquid year-round and holds up to the long slow cooking a medicated oil needs; classically it is snigdha (unctuous) and warming.
Coconut oil earned its place by geography and habit rather than by text: it is what grows along the Malabar and Konkan coasts. Ayurveda classes it as cooling.
Both are traditions, not clinical findings.
What the lab evidence actually shows
Hair oiling has more cosmetic-science literature behind it than most traditional practices — qualifiers included:
- Coconut oil gets inside the hair shaft. Mass spectrometry of hair cross-sections found coconut oil distributed within the fibre while mineral oil stayed on the surface [2].
- Coconut is the only common oil shown to cut protein loss. Of mineral, sunflower and coconut oils, coconut alone reduced protein loss appreciably in damaged and undamaged hair, used before or after washing. The proposed reason is lauric acid: low molecular weight, straight chain, high affinity for hair proteins [1].
- A second method agrees, less tidily. Films of coconut, olive and sunflower oil thinned on hair over time, coconut and sunflower further with heat, consistent with absorption; mineral oil did not [4]. That puts sunflower in the absorbing group, unlike the protein-loss study.
- One piece of scalp evidence, and it is Indian. Over 16 weeks in 140 Indian women, topical coconut oil shifted the scalp microbiome toward commensals linked with a healthy scalp [5]. Co-authored by L'Oréal researchers, sesame untested, and a microbiome shift is not a clinical outcome.
- Sesame has almost nothing comparable. A 2022 review covers sesame among hair oils, but the head-to-head fibre studies used coconut, sunflower and mineral oil [3]. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence — but sesame's case stays traditional.
Important: these are small lab studies on hair fibres plus one microbiome study. None tested hair growth or hair fall.

Picking one in practice
Two things the table cannot show. A north Indian winter decides this for you: coconut sets solid below roughly 24–25 °C, so in a Delhi January sesame is simply easier to spread. And if your hair is dry, frizzy or coloured, coconut applied before washing is the scenario the protein-loss study tested [1].
How long you leave it on matters as much as which you pick — see how long to leave hair oil on and how long before a hair oil shows results.
Cautions
- Neither oil grows new hair. Base oils condition and protect the fibre; neither is an answer to pattern hair loss.
- Patch test. Coconut is a contact allergen for a few people; sesame is a recognised allergen. Test on the inner forearm for 24 hours first.
- Flaky or itchy scalp: keep oiling short. Heavy oils left on for long stretches can make flaking feel worse.
- Never oil broken or inflamed scalp skin.
- See a doctor if hair fall keeps increasing over three months, or if you notice patchy loss, a widening parting, or scalp pain.
