Quick answer. Hard water does not pull hair out of the follicle. It leaves calcium and magnesium on the cuticle, so hair feels rough and coated and shampoo will not lather. Most so-called hard-water hair fall is breakage plus strands released while detangling. NCR groundwater is genuinely hard, so the problem is real, just misnamed.

How hard is NCR water, really?
Hard water carries a high concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium [1]. India's IS 10500 standard puts the acceptable limit at 200 mg/L total hardness, the outer permissible limit at 600 mg/L [2].
A 2025 survey of 105 groundwater samples in Bagpat, an NCR district of Uttar Pradesh, found total hardness of 86 to 1,064 mg/L, mean 348 mg/L: 80% over the acceptable limit, 8% over the permissible one [2].
Hardness varies street by street, and piped supply differs from a borewell or tanker. A test strip settles it.
What hard water does to a hair strand
Lab work on virgin and bleached hair showed that fibres take up calcium and magnesium from tap water, that the metals concentrate mainly in the cuticle (the overlapping outer scales), and that this uptake stiffens the fibre [3]. Hard water also inhibits lather, so you scrub harder [2].
Be honest about the rest. In that same study combing forces went down, not up, once fibres stiffened [3]. The coated, rough feeling is well documented; the step to "and therefore your hair snaps" is inference. And nothing published shows calcium from bathwater reaching the follicle.
The studies disagree
Almost every article says studies show hard water weakens hair. Two studies exist, and they disagree.
At PSG Institute of Medical Sciences, Coimbatore, hair from 15 volunteers sat in 212.5 ppm hard water on alternate days for 30 days: no statistically significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity versus distilled water [4]. A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa study of hair from 70 men found the opposite, a significant drop in tensile strength with hard water but not deionised [5].
Both tested cut hair in a beaker, not hair on a head. Uptake and stiffening are demonstrated; "hard water weakens hair" is contested; "hard water causes hair loss from the root" has no evidence at all.

What actually helps
- Test your hardness first. Strips cost little, and guessing leads to the wrong fix.
- Consider a shower filter, a softener, or a final rinse from stored filtered water. A plumbing decision, not a medical one.
- Clarify every 10 to 14 days. A chelating or clarifying wash lifts residue ordinary shampoo leaves behind. More often and you strip the hair.
- Detangle with conditioner still in, fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb. Most visible fall is created here.
- Use a pre-wash oil as a buffer. Coconut oil before washing reduces protein loss from the shaft [6] — measured on washing generally, not hard water, so treat it as a coating step. Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) oil is the traditional version; dosage varies by individual — check with a practitioner.
- Expect herbal cleansers to struggle. Reetha (Sapindus mukorossi) and shikakai (Acacia concinna) lather poorly in hard water.

When to see a doctor
Moving cities changes water, food, sleep, air and stress at once. Diffuse shedding after such a trigger appears about three to four months later [7], exactly when new arrivals blame the tap.
See a dermatologist rather than a plumber if you have:
- Heavy shedding continuing beyond three months
- Patchy bald spots or a visibly widening parting
- Persistent scalp itching, scaling, redness, pain or pustules
- Hair loss alongside fatigue, weight change, very heavy periods or a recent fever
Frequently asked questions
How do you deal with hard water causing hair fall? Handle it as breakage, not shedding. Test your water, add a shower filter or filtered final rinse, clarify every 10 to 14 days, and detangle with conditioner in. If the strands you lose carry a small pale bulb at the root rather than a snapped end, the water is not the cause.
Does hard water permanently damage hair? No. The mineral deposit sits outside the cuticle and comes off with a chelating or clarifying wash. Hair that has already broken cannot be rebuilt, so length takes time, but new growth emerges unaffected: nothing about hardness has been shown to reach the follicle.
Will a shower filter stop hard-water hair fall? It reduces the mineral load reaching your hair, which should mean less deposit and easier lathering. Be sceptical of anything stronger: no controlled trial has shown that shower filters reduce hair fall. If your shedding is driven by thyroid, iron or stress, a filter changes nothing.
Why did my hair fall increase after moving to Delhi? Possibly the water, and possibly everything else that changed with it. Relocation bundles new water with disrupted sleep, a different diet and higher stress, and diffuse shedding shows up roughly three to four months after any of those [7]. The tap is rarely the only variable.
