Tagar (Indian Valerian) for Sleep: Evidence, Dose, Safety

Quick answer. Tagar (Indian valerian, Valeriana jatamansi Jones, syn. V. wallichii DC.) is a Himalayan root traditionally used to support sleep. It is not European valerian (V. officinalis) and not jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) — three different plants people keep mixing up. One small Indian trial found Tagar churna improved how quickly people fell asleep and how long they slept. The evidence is early and limited, and most "valerian" research is on a different species that is itself inconclusive. Avoid in pregnancy and never combine with sedatives or alcohol.

You are reading a sleep-supplement label and the ingredient list says "Tagar", or maybe "Indian valerian," or "Valeriana wallichii." A relative swears by it; a reel calls it nature's answer to a sleeping pill; somewhere you have also heard of "jatamansi," and now you are not sure if these are all the same thing.

This guide answers three things: what Tagar actually is and how it differs from European valerian and jatamansi, whether it genuinely helps sleep, and the correct dose and safety picture.

You will leave able to read the label correctly and to have a sensible conversation with a practitioner, without the overpromising. Tagar is not a switch that knocks you out, and the research is thinner than the marketing suggests.


What is Tagar (Indian valerian)?

Tagar is the Sanskrit name (Tagara) for a Himalayan valerian — botanically Valeriana jatamansi Jones, which carries the well-documented synonym Valeriana wallichii DC. [1]. It is also commonly called Indian valerian, Muskbala and Sugandhbala in Hindi. The part used is the root and rhizome, harvested from valerian species native to the temperate Himalayas.

In classical Ayurveda, Tagara is traditionally classified as Nidrajanaka (sleep-inducing) and as a Medhya / Manas-shamak (mind-calming) herb, used in contexts such as Anidra (sleeplessness). This is a traditional textual classification, not a modern clinical finding, and we keep the two clearly separate throughout this post.

Where does the modern research stand? Limited. There is one small Indian human trial on Tagar itself for primary insomnia (covered below), a body of laboratory and animal work on its chemistry, and a much larger (but inconclusive) literature on a different, European valerian species. So the honest summary is: traditionally well-established, scientifically early.


Tagar vs valerian vs jatamansi: three herbs people mix up

This is the confusion that sells a lot of mislabelled supplements. Three distinct plants get blurred into one word:

Two takeaways. First, Tagar and European valerian are related (same genus, overlapping chemistry) but they are not the same species, so you cannot assume European valerian studies apply to Tagar. Second, "Jatamansi" almost always means Nardostachys jatamansi, a different genus entirely, even though the two Himalayan herbs have been historically confused. (The species epithet "jatamansi" appearing in both botanical names is exactly why the muddle persists.) If your label says "Indian valerian," it should mean V. jatamansi (Tagar), not the European plant and not spikenard.

Does Tagar really help with sleep? What the evidence says

The most directly relevant human study is a small Indian trial. Toolika and colleagues compared Tagara (V. wallichii) against Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) in people with primary insomnia (Anidra): 34 enrolled, 30 completed, 15 per group, over one month [2]. Within the Tagara group, the researchers reported improvement in initiation of sleep, sleep duration, disturbed sleep and disturbance in daily routine, and concluded that both herbs helped but the Tagara group showed better results than the Jatamansi group.

That is a genuinely on-point, encouraging signal, and it deserves honest framing. The trial was small (30 completers), single-centre, had no placebo arm, and relied on subjective, within-group outcomes. So it is best read as suggestive, not as proof that Tagar reliably improves sleep.

Here is the part most articles get wrong. The large "valerian works for sleep" literature is almost entirely on **European V. officinalis, a different species, and even that evidence is inconclusive.**

  • A systematic review of nine randomised trials concluded plainly that "the evidence for valerian as a treatment for insomnia is inconclusive" [3].
  • A later meta-analysis of 16 studies (n = 1,093) reported a relative risk of 1.8 (95% CI 1.2–2.9) for improved sleep quality from 6 of those trials — but flagged evidence of publication bias (p = 0.03) and a small, poor-quality evidence base. The authors framed it as valerian might improve sleep, not that it clearly does [4].
  • A larger 2020 review (60 studies, n ≈ 6,894) found valerian improved subjective sleep quality, but the benefit "was not demonstrated with quantitative or objective measurements" [5].

So the picture is: a subjective benefit signal, a weak objective one, and that signal is largely from a European species. We do not present those results as proof that Tagar works. Important: the studies that exist are small, short-term or subjective, and the strongest body of evidence is for a different plant. Treat Tagar's sleep benefit as suggestive, not definitive.


How Tagar may work: the proposed GABA mechanism

Valerian roots contain two main groups of compounds: the sesquiterpenoids (including valerenic acid) and the valepotriates [1]. The leading hypothesis is that these modulate the GABA-A receptor system — the same calming, inhibitory pathway that several sedative medicines act on.

In laboratory and animal work, valerenic acid has been shown to act at a specific GABA-A receptor site, with its calming effect depending on a particular receptor subunit in mice [6]. A review focused specifically on V. jatamansi (Tagar) describes its valepotriates and related compounds acting through GABAergic pathways, linked to sedative and sleep-related activity in extracts [7].

Two honest qualifiers. This is a proposed mechanism, drawn mostly from in-vitro and animal studies. It is not the same as a proven clinical effect in humans. And Tagar is not "a natural sleeping pill" or a herbal substitute for prescription sedatives; describing a shared biological pathway is not the same as claiming equivalent strength or reliability.


How to take Tagar for sleep: dose, form, timing

There is one thing worth being clear about up front: there is no established "recommended dose" of Tagar from a robust dosing trial. What we have is the dose used in that single small study, plus the much smaller strengths commonly seen on commercial labels — and these are not equivalent.

A couple of practical notes. First, the gap between the 4 g churna dose used in research and the much smaller capsule strengths on the shelf is large, so do not assume a small capsule "matches the study." Second, traditional and monograph use is short-term (weeks to a few months) because long-term safety data are limited (see cautions). Tagar is best thought of as a short, guided course, not an indefinite nightly habit.


When NOT to use Tagar — cautions

Tagar is a calming herb, and that is exactly why some people should not use it without medical advice.

  • Pregnancy & lactation: Avoid. Tagar is traditionally regarded as a uterine stimulant and its safety in pregnancy is not established; it should also not be used while breastfeeding [8].
  • With sedatives, sleep or anti-anxiety medication, or alcohol: Do not combine. Valerian can add to the sedative effect of barbiturates, benzodiazepines and other CNS depressants — stacking calming agents can cause excess drowsiness [8]. Speak to a doctor first if you take any of these.
  • Before surgery / anaesthesia: Valerian should be discontinued at least one week before surgery because it may interact with anaesthesia [8].
  • Driving & operating machinery: Because it can cause daytime drowsiness or dullness, do not drive or operate machinery after taking it until you know how it affects you.
  • Low blood pressure: Use caution, as lightheadedness and blood-pressure lowering have been reported with Tagar in consumer monographs.
  • GI sensitivity: Some people report nausea, diarrhoea or other digestive upset.
  • Long-term use: Limited long-term safety data; rare liver-injury and pancreatitis case reports have been noted with valerian [8]. Keep to short courses under guidance.

Tagar is one of the more interesting names in the sleep aisle precisely because it is so often mislabelled. Our view is simple: read the botanical name first. If a product says "Indian valerian / Valeriana jatamansi," that is Tagar; if it says "*Valeriana officinalis*," that is the European species whose evidence does not transfer cleanly; if it says "*Nardostachys jatamansi*," that is a different herb altogether.

On whether to use it: the honest grade is "promising but thin." There is one small Indian trial where Tagar did well, a plausible (but unproven) calming mechanism, and centuries of traditional use as a Nidrajanaka herb. That is enough to consider a short, practitioner-guided course, and not enough to lean on it as a reliable fix or a substitute for sleep medicine. Sleep is built first on the unglamorous basics: a consistent wind-down, a dark cool room, and screens off well before bed. A herb is, at best, a small nudge on top of that.

Can I take tagar with melatonin or a sleeping pill?

It is best not to combine Tagar with melatonin, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication or alcohol. Valerian can add to the sedative effect of CNS depressants, so stacking calming agents may cause excess drowsiness [8].
