Bhringraj (Eclipta prostrata, also written Eclipta alba) is called kesharaja, the "king of hair", in classical Ayurveda, traditionally the premier herb for hair, and the one with the most direct modern research behind the growth story.

Here is what that research actually found:

  • It promoted the hair-growth (anagen) phase in animal and cell studies. In mice and in human dermal papilla cells (the cells at the base of the follicle), Eclipta prostrata increased FGF-7 and decreased FGF-5 (growth signals that help keep follicles in the active growing phase) and was studied alongside topical 3% minoxidil as a comparator [1].
  • A methanol extract pushed resting follicles into growth, dose-dependently. In pigmented mice in the resting (telogen) phase, a whole-plant Eclipta alba methanol extract promoted hair growth in a dose-dependent way, with growth-phase skin expressing the expected growth signals [2].
  • In rats, an extract gave more growth-phase follicles than the minoxidil comparator. A petroleum-ether extract of Eclipta alba increased the number of follicles in the anagen phase and shortened time to hair growth in male rats, performing better than the 2% minoxidil comparator arm, in that animal model [3].

Important: these are animal and laboratory results. The minoxidil "comparison" was a comparator inside mouse and rat studies, not evidence that bhringraj works like minoxidil in people. Read it as: in preclinical research, bhringraj promoted the hair-growth phase. Amla oil — the 5-alpha-reductase angle and greying lore

Amla (Emblica officinalis, the Indian gooseberry) is a classical hair tonic, traditionally reached for both as a general hair strengthener and for premature greying.

Its most interesting modern finding is mechanistic. In a laboratory study screening Thai plants traditionally used for hair, amla inhibited 5-alpha-reductase (the enzyme involved in pattern hair loss) ranking among the more active herbs tested (second of seventeen), with enzyme inhibition correlating with hair-growth promotion in the screen [4].

Two honest caveats:

  • This is an in vitro (test-tube) result, not proof that amla treats male or female pattern hair loss. It is a plausible mechanism worth knowing, not a clinical outcome.

Brahmi oil — calming scalp comfort, thinnest hair evidence

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is traditionally used to calm the mind and, by extension, the scalp. It shows up in hair blends for its soothing, cooling reputation and its link to stress-related self-care.

Of the three herbs here, brahmi has the thinnest hair-specific evidence. There is no strong clinical data that brahmi oil grows hair. Two things to hold onto. First, this is a cosmetic, protect-the-strand finding — not a growth claim. Coconut oil conditions and reduces breakage; it does not grow hair. Second, sesame oil is a respected classical base, warming and Vata-pacifying in Ayurveda, but it does not have the same measured protein-loss or penetration data, so we present it as tradition, without claiming it protects the strand the way coconut does.

Practical read: a herb-infused coconut base gives you a measured strand-protection benefit on top of the herb. A sesame base is a fine traditional choice if you prefer it. Just choose it on tradition, not on equivalent proof.
