How to Identify Pure Shilajit: Home Tests vs Lab Reports

Quick answer. Home tests can flag a crude fake: pure shilajit resin dissolves fully in warm water, softens in your palm and does not burn like plastic. But no home test can detect heavy metals or mycotoxins. That is why raw shilajit should never be eaten, why Ayurveda purifies it first (shodhana), and why the only real proof of purity is a batch-matched lab report.

This post answers the question between them: how do you identify pure shilajit before you pay?

Why purity is the whole question with shilajit

Shilajit (also called mumijo) is a tar-like exudate collected from high-altitude Himalayan rock, and its risks come from that origin.

Raw shilajit is not a wellness product. Researchers warn that eating it unpurified risks intoxication from mycotoxins, heavy-metal ions, oxidant compounds and free radicals; only a purified, ready-for-use preparation should be consumed [1].

Nor is contamination theoretical. A 2008 JAMA study of 193 Ayurvedic products bought online found roughly one in five contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic; US-made fared no better than Indian-made [2]. That is the wider Ayurvedic market, not shilajit specifically, but it is the shelf this product sits on.

With shilajit, purity is the product.


Shodhana: what "purified" shilajit should mean

In Ayurveda, shilajit is a rasayana (rejuvenative), and classical practice never used it raw. It first goes through shodhana: dissolving the raw exudate in water (some traditions use decoctions such as triphala), filtering out rock and grit, then concentrating it slowly at low heat into resin. The method is tradition; the need for purification is where tradition and research agree [1].

Modern trials follow the same rule: the best-known randomised trial in healthy men used purified shilajit at a fixed dose [3], a second landmark study used processed shilajit capsules [4], and the safety literature ties its reassurance to purified shilajit at sensible doses [5]. Nobody studies raw resin.

Shilajit home tests: what each one can and cannot show

The popular tests are screening checks, not verdicts: they can expose a fake made of tar, gum or filler; none can see contamination.

Every row ends the same way. No home test detects heavy metals or mycotoxins. They can save you from tar in a jar, not show a jar is safe. Capsules and gummies remove even these checks (shilajit format comparison).


Why a shilajit lab report (CoA) beats every home test

A certificate of analysis (CoA) is the only verdict-level evidence, because it measures what home tests cannot. A genuine one has four things:

  • A batch number matching your jar. A "lab tested" badge with no batch is marketing, not evidence.
  • A named, accredited laboratory. In India, look for NABL accreditation on the report.
  • Heavy-metal results for lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium against the permissible limits in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
  • Microbial counts, such as total plate count and yeast and mould.

One line settles most purchases: ask for the batch CoA. No report on request is your answer.


Red flags when buying shilajit

Some listings tell you everything before any test.

  • A price far below the category floor. Cheap is not automatically fake, but purification, testing and licensing cost real money; a price that could not cover them means something in that chain is missing.
  • "Raw" or "unprocessed" sold as a virtue. With shilajit, unprocessed is the hazard [1].
  • No batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, or licence details on the label.
  • A big fulvic-acid percentage as a purity badge. Published work puts fulvic acids at roughly 60 to 80 percent of the purified complex, and the figure depends on the assay method [1]; that number belongs on a CoA, not a front label.
  • No lab report on request. The conversation is over.
  • Vague origin. "Himalayan" with no company name and address behind it.

When NOT to use shilajit: cautions

  • Never consume raw or unpurified shilajit. It may carry mycotoxins, heavy-metal ions, oxidant compounds and free radicals [1].
  • Pregnancy and lactation: avoid; not enough safety data.
  • Iron overload or haemochromatosis: avoid; shilajit is mineral-rich.
  • Gout or raised uric acid: check with your doctor first.
  • On medication or managing a chronic condition: doctor first.
