The first time most people meet omega-7 is on a label: a capsule jar or a juice carton with a picture of small orange berries, and "rich in Omega-7" printed where you expected omega-3.
You have heard about omega-3 your whole life, from cardiologists, cooking shows and your mother. Nobody ever mentioned a seven. So the sensible question is whether omega-7 is a real nutrient with real research behind it, or a number invented by marketing.
This post answers that. You will leave able to explain omega-7 in one line, knowing exactly which human trials exist, what they found, and what has not been tested yet.
What is omega-7 (palmitoleic acid)?
Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) is a monounsaturated fatty acid found in sea buckthorn berry pulp, macadamia nuts, and in small amounts in dairy and fish. It is not an essential fatty acid: your body also makes it on its own. Researchers study it for skin-lipid and mucous-membrane support, which is why it now appears on beauty-from-within labels.
The name describes its shape. In omega-7, the first double bond sits seven carbons from the tail of the molecule; in omega-3, it sits three carbons in. Chemists write palmitoleic acid as C16:1n-7.
That "non-essential" status explains why you never heard of it. Nutrition guidelines focus on fats you must eat because your body cannot make them. Omega-7 never made the syllabus, and stayed obscure until supplement labels revived it.
The research interest is real, though. In 2008, a team at Harvard identified palmitoleate as a "lipokine" in mice: a fat released by fat tissue that behaves like a signalling hormone [1]. That finding is animal research and stays in the lab for now. A 2017 review of the human data calls the picture mixed, with palmitoleate linked to both favourable and unfavourable outcomes depending on context [2]. Some supplement pages stretch the mouse work into promises about blood sugar and cholesterol. Because the human findings are mixed, we leave those claims alone.
One line to remember: omega-7 is a rare, non-essential fatty acid, and one thorny Himalayan berry carries far more of it than almost anything else you can eat.
Why sea buckthorn is the omega-7 berry
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides, also called seaberry) is a hardy shrub whose orange berries yield two different oils, and most labels never tell you which one they used.
The distinction matters more than any other fact in this post. Oil pressed from the berry's pulp and peel runs 12 to 39 per cent palmitoleic acid, depending on subspecies and where it grew. Oil from the seed contains virtually none [3]. When a brand prints "up to 40% omega-7", it is quoting the top of a wide natural range, from the pulp fraction only. The same berry's seed oil would score near zero.
That range still makes sea buckthorn pulp oil among the richest known plant sources of omega-7. Macadamia nut oil is the other notable one. Nobody can call sea buckthorn the only source, and we won't.
India's connection to this berry is geographic, not scriptural. Sea buckthorn grows wild across the cold-desert Himalayas, in Ladakh and Lahaul-Spiti, where high-altitude communities have long used the berries and the plant features in the region's Sowa-Rigpa (Amchi) medical tradition [4]. It is not a classical Ayurvedic samhita herb, and it has no ancient Sanskrit monograph. We would rather say that plainly than invent a pedigree. The berry itself is notably rich in vitamin C and carotenoids, with content varying widely by origin [4]; treat any "12x more vitamin C than oranges" line with suspicion, because the crop varies several-fold.
What human research actually shows
Sea buckthorn oil has been through a handful of randomised, placebo-controlled human trials, mostly from one Finnish research group. Here is what they found, strongest first.
- Dry, irritated eyes. A double-blind RCT gave 2 g of sea buckthorn oil daily for three months across autumn and winter; 86 adults completed it. Tear-film osmolarity, a saltiness marker that climbs when eyes dry out, rose significantly less than in the placebo group, and eye redness scored lower. Several other endpoints did not reach significance [5]. A modest, mixed, but genuine result.
- Delicate-tissue integrity. In 98 postmenopausal women taking 3 g of the oil daily for three months, one laboratory measure of vaginal epithelium integrity improved versus placebo, while the overall composite index showed only a trend [6]. We mention this as research on moisture-related tissue, not as a use for any product.
- The skin-condition trial that gets misquoted. In 49 adults with atopic dermatitis, 5 g daily of pulp oil, seed oil or paraffin placebo ran for four months. Skin symptoms improved on pulp oil, and they also improved on the placebo, so the trial cannot support any skin-condition claim [7]. What it did establish is useful anyway: dietary pulp oil significantly raised omega-7 levels in participants' blood lipids [7]. Swallowed omega-7 does reach circulation.
Important: these are small, short-term studies, several from the same group. Treat the evidence as suggestive, not settled.
Omega-7 and your skin: mechanism versus proof
Palmitoleic acid occurs naturally in human skin-surface lipids, which is the mechanistic reason omega-7 keeps being pitched as "moisture from within." The idea extrapolates from the eye and tissue trials above: if oral sea buckthorn oil supported those moisture-related surfaces, perhaps skin behaves similarly.
Perhaps. But as of a PubMed check in August 2026, no published randomised trial has tested oral sea buckthorn oil against placebo for skin hydration in healthy adults. The study most brands imply exists has not been run. We would rather tell you that than borrow a conclusion.
There is also a built-in speed limit. In the same Finnish programme, four months of daily sea buckthorn oils barely shifted the fatty-acid composition of participants' skin lipids; the researchers concluded skin glycerophospholipids are well buffered against short-term dietary change [8]. Skin renews slowly and guards its own chemistry. Omega-7 vs omega-3: different jobs, not rivals
The seven is not an upgrade on the three. They are different molecules doing different work.

Here is the India reality: unless you live in Ladakh or buy Leh Berry juice on a holiday there, sea buckthorn essentially never enters an Indian kitchen. Macadamias are an expensive import. That absence, more than any marketing story, is why omega-7 shows up as a capsule rather than a cooking ingredient.
Our take: how omega-7 fits a real routine
We think of omega-7 as a slow, quiet layer under a skin routine, not a substitute for one. The outside of the routine still does the visible work: cleanser, moisturiser, oil, sunscreen, and in a Delhi winter, a routine built for the season. When not to take sea buckthorn: cautions
- Blood thinners. One small crossover study in 12 healthy men found sea buckthorn oil slowed platelet aggregation over four weeks [9]. That is preliminary, not a proven interaction, but it is reason enough to talk to your doctor first if you take aspirin, warfarin or any anticoagulant.
- Planned surgery. For the same reason, pause the supplement before a scheduled procedure and tell your surgical team what you take.
- Pregnancy and lactation. There is not enough safety data for supplemental doses. Consult your obstetrician rather than experimenting.
- Sensitive digestion. Oils can sit heavy on an empty stomach. Take it with food.
- Dosage. Start with the label dose. More capsules do not mean faster skin.
