How KayaSuddhi Sources & Tests Its Herbs (Farm-to-Bottle)

Quick answer. KayaSuddhi's sourcing process is built around one uncomfortable fact: independent testing has found detectable heavy metals in a meaningful share of Ayurvedic products sold online. So the questions that matter are not slogans. They are verifiable controls: where the herb comes from, whether the correct plant and plant part are identified, whether each batch is tested for lead, mercury and arsenic against WHO and AYUSH limits, whether the extract is standardized, and whether you can see a Certificate of Analysis. Here's how to check that, for us or for any brand. This article is educational and is not medical advice.

If you have ever paused before clicking "buy" on an Ayurvedic supplement (perhaps after seeing a headline about heavy metals or a 2021 news cycle about a popular herb and liver injury), that hesitation is reasonable, and informed.

This article answers a single, honest question: how does a responsible brand actually source and test its herbs, and how would you verify it? We will walk through our sourcing intent, our identity and contaminant testing approach, what a Certificate of Analysis is, and what the FSSAI and AYUSH labels really mean.

Where we are still building paperwork, we say so plainly. We would rather teach you the standard and let you hold us to it than make a claim we cannot yet show you. You will leave with a checklist you can apply to any brand, without overpromising.


Why sourcing and testing actually matter

"Natural" does not automatically mean "clean." The most rigorous evidence we have on this is uncomfortable, and it is the reason a sourcing-and-testing process exists at all rather than just nice packaging.

In a peer-reviewed study, independent researchers bought Ayurvedic medicines online and analysed them in a lab. About one in five of the products tested (roughly 20.7%) contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic, and every metal-containing product exceeded at least one published standard for acceptable daily intake [1]. Importantly, the contamination rate was similar for products made in the United States and those made in India, so "imported" or "made in India" alone tells you nothing about purity.

A separate, more recent reminder comes from giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), one of India's most popular immunity herbs. A multicentre Indian study reported herb-induced liver injury in a 43-patient cohort, with a median of about 46 days from starting the herb to symptoms [2]. The authors' point (and ours) is not "giloy is dangerous." It is that correct plant identity, quality control, and medical guidance matter, and that heavily promoted herbals deserve proper safety attention rather than blind trust.

We share these studies not to scare you or to imply competitors are careless. We share them because they explain why the rest of this page exists. The fix for a category-level risk is not a louder marketing claim — it is a verifiable process and a reader who knows what to look for.


Where our herbs come from

The first control is the most basic one: is the raw material actually the herb it claims to be, and the right part of that plant?

Botanical identity is where many quality problems start. Two plants can share a common name, and a supply chain that does not verify species can let the wrong one through — the kind of mix-up that sits behind some of the safety concerns above. Our sourcing intent is to buy raw material that can be traced to its origin and to confirm its identity before anything is processed, using organoleptic checks, macroscopic and microscopic examination, and, where appropriate, chromatographic fingerprinting against a reference.

Plant part matters just as much as plant name. Ashwagandha is the clearest current example: Indian regulators have moved toward a root-only position for ashwagandha used in food supplements (FSSAI advisory, 16 April 2026; AYUSH directive, 15 April 2026, a point still being litigated, so we re-verify it before each batch). A responsible label should state the plant part used. Our commitment is to declare the plant part on-label and to use root extract where the standard calls for it.

A note on the traditional layer: classical Ayurveda has its own concept of purification, shodhana, for processing herbs and minerals. We respect that tradition, but to be honest with you, classical shodhana is not a substitute for modern instrumental testing. Identity checks and a contaminant panel by an accredited lab are what confirm a batch is within today's safety limits.


How herbs are tested: the contaminant checklist

Once identity is confirmed, the next question is contamination. Below is the testing checklist a careful buyer should expect: what each test is, why it matters, and the standard it is measured against. These are the generic WHO and AYUSH expectations; we describe the standard, not a specific batch result (see the cautions in the COA section).

The heavy-metal limits above are not just a brand preference. India's Department of AYUSH has made heavy-metal testing for Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani products a regulatory expectation, with results required to stay within WHO-aligned permissible limits, a requirement in effect since 1 January 2006 [4]. Heavy metals are usually measured by ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), a sensitive method that reports concentrations in parts per million (ppm, equal to mg/kg).

One honest limit on language: no responsible brand should claim a product is "free from heavy metals" as an absolute, because that is not how testing works. The supportable statement is "tested to be within permissible limits" against a stated standard — which is exactly why the document those results live on, the COA, matters so much.


What "standardized extract" means on a label

"Standardized extract" is one of the most useful phrases on a supplement label — and one of the least understood.

A standardized extract is one processed so that each batch contains a consistent, stated percentage of a chosen marker or active compound. Plain herb powder can vary widely from harvest to harvest; standardization is the manufacturing step that aims to make batch three behave like batch one. So a label reading "standardized to X% [marker]" is telling you the maker is measuring and controlling for that compound rather than hoping for it.

This is a manufacturing and quality concept, not a health claim. A higher marker percentage does not mean a product "works better" for you, only that the batch is more consistent. When you see a specific percentage on a label, it should match that product's own on-label and Certificate-of-Analysis specification. We describe the concept here rather than printing a number, because the number must come from a verified batch report, not from marketing copy.


How to read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the single most useful document for verifying any supplement — and you are entitled to ask any brand for one, including us.

A COA is a lab report for a specific batch of product. When you read one, look for these fields:

  1. Product and batch/lot number. The COA should match the exact batch in your hand, not a generic product line.
  2. Tested parameters. Heavy metals, microbial limits, pesticides, identity/assay, and the marker percentage if it is a standardized extract.
  3. Method used. For heavy metals, you want to see ICP-MS (or a comparable validated method) named.
  4. Result vs specification. Each parameter shows a measured result alongside the permissible limit, so you can see it passed.
  5. Lab name and accreditation. Ideally an independent, accredited laboratory (in India, NABL accreditation is the relevant mark).
  6. Date. Testing should be reasonably recent and tied to the batch.

If a brand cannot produce a batch-specific COA from an accredited lab, that is your signal to ask more questions before buying. This is the most powerful single check in your toolkit, and it applies to every brand equally.


FSSAI vs AYUSH: what the labels mean

These two terms appear on a lot of Indian wellness packaging, and they are not interchangeable. This is the neutral version of what each is: we explain the system rather than asserting which approvals we hold, because licensing status is something a brand should only state once it is granted and verifiable.

  • FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) governs food and nutraceutical products — supplements, juices, gummies. An FSSAI framework sets out permitted claims and labelling for products sold as food supplements.
  • AYUSH (the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) governs products sold with Ayurvedic medicine positioning, including manufacturing licensing for Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani formulations.

A genuinely useful detail: a brand should only describe itself as "licensed" or "certified" under either system once that licence is actually granted, and should be able to show the number. Those phrases are either banned or unverifiable, and you should be sceptical of any brand that leans on them. When NOT to use Ayurvedic supplements without advice — cautions

This is a process article, not dosage guidance, but the safety logic above carries a few clear cautions worth stating plainly.

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Do not start any new herbal supplement without medical advice; several common herbs are not recommended in pregnancy.
  • Liver or kidney conditions: Given documented cases of herb-induced liver injury in the category, anyone with liver disease should consult a doctor before taking any herbal product and choose lab-verified, correctly identified material.
  • Drug interactions: Herbs can interact with prescription medicines (for example, blood-sugar or blood-thinning medication). Tell your doctor what you are taking.
  • Self-prescribing: Do not self-prescribe Ayurvedic products to manage a diagnosed condition, and do not delay conventional care to do so.
  • Children: Use herbal supplements in children only under qualified guidance.
