What each one is

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, root) is a small shrub whose dried root is used in Ayurveda as a rasayana — a calming, grounding herb traditionally used to help the body cope with stress and to support vitality. Its main studied compounds are withanolides. In modern wellness language it is usually called an adaptogen, and on-label in India it is used as a root extract (per the FSSAI root-only advisory of 16 April 2026; this status is litigated, so re-verify before relying on it).

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like exudate that seeps from Himalayan rock. Its principal bioactives are fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, plus trace minerals [5]. In Ayurveda it is a mineral-rich rasayana traditionally used for stamina and ageing well. One important caveat from that same review: raw, unpurified resin can carry heavy metals and other contaminants, so only purified, lab-tested shilajit should be consumed.


Ashwagandha for energy: what the evidence shows

Ashwagandha's reputation for "energy" is really a reputation for taking the brake off — lowering stress so your existing energy is less drained. That is where its human trials are strongest.

  • May support a calmer, less-stressed state. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT of 64 chronically stressed adults, ashwagandha root extract 300 mg twice daily for 60 days lowered perceived stress and serum cortisol versus placebo [1].
  • May support memory, focus and sleep quality. In a separate double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT of stressed adults, sustained-release root extract 300 mg/day for 90 days improved memory, sleep quality and perceived stress versus placebo [2].

Put together, ashwagandha's "energy" is best understood as mental energy: calmer focus and better sleep that build gradually over weeks, not a sudden lift.

Important: even these are relatively small, short-term trials. Treat the evidence as suggestive and supportive, not definitive.


Shilajit for energy: what the evidence shows

Shilajit is marketed hardest for physical energy and stamina, so it deserves an honest grading: its human evidence is real but thin, and its headline mechanism is mostly animal-based.

  • One small RCT suggests it may help retain muscular strength. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 63 recreationally active men, shilajit 500 mg/day for 8 weeks helped the high-dose group resist the decline in maximal voluntary strength after fatiguing exercise, versus placebo [3]. This is the strongest human signal for shilajit and "physical energy", but it is a single small study, in men only, and it measured strength retention, not a raw energy boost.
  • The proposed "energy" mechanism is largely animal-grade. The idea that shilajit's fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones support mitochondrial ATP (your cells' energy currency) rests mainly on animal and mechanistic work. In a rat model of chronic fatigue, processed shilajit helped preserve mitochondrial function and modulated the stress (HPA) axis [4]. This was an animal study, so it shows a plausible mechanism, not a proven human energy benefit.

The takeaway: shilajit's physical-stamina story is biologically plausible and has one supportive human trial, but it is considerably thinner than ashwagandha's evidence base. Treat any rapid-energy-spike marketing with scepticism — no human trial supports a sudden surge.

  • Iron overload / haemochromatosis: Shilajit is mineral-rich and can add to iron load, so avoid it if you have iron-overload conditions.
  • Raw or untested resin: Unpurified shilajit can carry heavy metals and other contaminants — only use purified, third-party-tested resin [5].
  • Surgery, autoimmune conditions, liver concerns: Ashwagandha is generally cautioned before surgery and in autoimmune disease, and rare liver-injury reports exist [6].
