Modern research has studied standardized root extracts for stress, sleep, strength, and exercise recovery. The evidence for muscle and joint outcomes specifically is younger and thinner than the marketing suggests — promising in places, preliminary in others.


Does ashwagandha help joint pain?

The fairest answer: there is one good Indian randomized controlled trial suggesting it supports joint comfort and mobility, but that is a long way from calling it an arthritis treatment.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 60 adults with knee joint pain and discomfort, a standardized Withania somnifera extract taken twice daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced pain, stiffness, and difficulty with daily movement versus placebo. The higher-dose group (250 mg twice daily) showed the earliest effect at around four weeks and a clear dose-dependent response [1].

Two honest caveats matter here:

  • The extract was a root-and-leaf aqueous extract, not root only. So this study supports joint comfort in general; it does not validate any specific root-only product as identical, and we are not claiming it does.
  • This is one trial, on knee discomfort — not a cure for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Frame the result as joint comfort and mobility support, nothing more.

For context, ashwagandha also appears in traditional Ayurvedic regimens explored for rheumatoid arthritis. One small open-label pilot combined ashwagandha powder with a classical preparation called Sidh Makardhwaj [4]. We mention it only to flag a safety point: that pilot had no control group and used a mercury-containing classical formulation, and urinary mercury rose after treatment. Does ashwagandha help muscle growth and recovery?

  • Muscle strength and size. In a randomized controlled trial of 57 young men new to training, 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily (600 mg/day) alongside supervised resistance training for 8 weeks produced significantly greater gains in bench press and leg-extension strength, and greater arm and chest muscle size, versus placebo [2].
  • Less exercise-induced muscle damage. In the same trial, the ashwagandha group also showed a significantly greater reduction in serum creatine kinase (a marker of muscle damage), which points to less post-workout muscle stress [2].
  • Perceived recovery and sleep in athletes. In 30 professional female footballers, 600 mg/day of ashwagandha root extract for 28 days significantly improved Total Quality Recovery and perceived sleep quality versus placebo [3].
  • Strength signal in athletes: not confirmed. In that same female-athlete study, hand-grip strength showed a group-by-time signal overall, but the post-hoc comparison was not statistically significant — so a strength benefit was not confirmed in this trial [3].

Bear in mind these are small, short-to-medium-term trials. The strongest finding (strength plus reduced muscle damage with training) comes from one 8-week study in untrained men, so treat the evidence as suggestive and supportive of training, not definitive.


How to take ashwagandha for recovery: dose, timing, form

Across the recovery and strength trials, the commonly studied range is 300–600 mg per day of a standardized root extract, often split into two doses. Strength and recovery effects in those studies emerged over roughly 4 to 12 weeks of consistent daily use alongside training. This is not a same-day painkiller.

  • Plant part: root (or root extract). Current Indian guidance permits ashwagandha root and root extracts; leaf is not permitted. A compliant product will declare the plant part on the label.
  • Standardization: a stated withanolide percentage. This tells you how much active compound you are actually getting, rather than relying on raw milligrams alone.

If a product hides the plant part, the withanolide percentage, or its testing, treat that as a reason to look elsewhere.


When NOT to use ashwagandha: cautions

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Avoid. Ashwagandha is traditionally contraindicated in pregnancy and is not recommended while breastfeeding.
  • Thyroid and autoimmune medication: Ashwagandha may affect thyroid hormone levels and immune activity, so it can interact with thyroid medication and may not suit people with autoimmune conditions or on immune-modulating drugs — check with your doctor first.
  • Sedatives and CNS depressants: It may add to the effect of sedatives, sleep aids, or anti-anxiety medication. Discuss with your prescriber before combining.
  • Before surgery: Stop ahead of planned surgery (commonly advised at least two weeks before), as it may interact with anaesthesia and other peri-operative medicines.
  • Liver concerns: Rare case reports have linked ashwagandha supplements to liver injury. Stop and seek medical advice if you notice unusual fatigue, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
